Savanah Regional Minister Inaugurates Committee to Stop Illegal Rose Wood Logging

Hon. Adam Salifu Braimah, the Savannah Regional Minister has inaugurated a Seventeen-Member Committee to help curtail the illegal logging of Rose wood and indiscriminate charcoal burning in the Region.

The committee was set up as part of recommendation from the Alhaji Nyari Investigative Committee Report on illegal rose wood logging report. The Management committee is charged with the responsibility of ending the menace of illegal logging of rosewood and to regulate charcoal burning in commercial quantities in the region.

The seventeen members committee is made up of all District Chief Executives in the Region, Traditional Leaders,  Mr Zakaria Iddi Tomlinson – (Agriculturist); Mr Saase Kwasi Baah (Regional Planning Officer) and Mr Issaka Zitor (National Commission for Civic Education) and Mr Jeremiah Seidu (Jaksally Development Organisation).
Other members are Mr Godwin Evenyor Dzokoto – (A Rocha Ghana); DCOP Bediako (Savannah Regional Police Commander); Borejinkpr Habibu Muftawu (Gonjaland Youth Association) and the West Gonja Municipal Assembly Forestry Range Manager and headed by Tejepewura Saaka A. Sadick Bonyanso (I) as Chairman and Dr Musah Ibrahim Mordzeh Ekpampo as Secretary.

Mr. Godwin Evenyor Dzokoto, a project manager at A Rocha Ghana, expressed concern over the impact of illegal logging in the region and the need for more efforts to preserve the forests. He was optimistic that, the committee will exercise it full mandate to curb the illegal rosewood logging menace and help implement the recommendations from the Investigative report. He expressed his gratitude to the Regional Minister, Hon. Adam Salifu Braimah, for taking proactive actions to ensure the ecosystem and biodiversity of the newly created region is protected and preserved for the future generations.

Some of the recommendation from the  Alhaji Nyari Investigative Committee Report are; total ban on harvesting and exportation of rosewood, regulating charcoal burning, embarking on massive afforestation in order to safeguard the land.  The report also recommended that the Regional Coordinating Council embarks on an intensive sensitisation programme in all Districts and Municipalities of the Savannah Region to highlight the dangers and long-term environmental effects of logging such as include desertification, climate change, and loss of biodiversity.
