North-Gonja CREAMA’s Bye-laws Passed

The Community Resource Management Area (CREMA) Bye-law for the North-Gonja District Assembly was passed at the recent 2nd General Assembly Meeting of the District Assembly on August 15, 2018. This bye-law empowers CREMA communities to enforce sustainable natural resource management regulations within three communities: Yazori Kumbo CREMA; Bawena-Kpulumbo CREMA and the Grubagu-Wawato CREMA.

In October 2017, the West Gonja District Assembly CREMA bye-law was passed to support the work of the Murugu-Mognori CREMA. The passage of this new bye-law for the North-Gonja CREMA is considered a great milestone towards ensuring efficient management of resources. These CREMAs have proven that given sufficient support, policy and legal empowerment, they can sustainably manage and reduce the menace of deforestation and degradation within the fragile savanna eco-zone found in the northern parts of Ghana.

The Community Resource Management Area (CREMA) is a concept promulgated by the Collaborative Resource Management Policy of 2000 by the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission of Ghana to give communities the right to sustainably manage and benefit economically from their natural resources. A Rocha Ghana with support from the Wildlife Division and development partners like IUCN NL Committee have over the years supported the establishment and development of CREMAs in communities neighboring the Mole National Park in the North-Gonja District of the Northern Region of Ghana.
