Accra City Hotel Acts “For Nature”
The Accra City Hotel is a 4-star hotel in the heart of the national capital of Ghana and a member of Businesses in Environmental Stewardship Network formed by A Rocha Ghana.
In line with the advent of the Sustainable Development Goals and a fast “greening” Hospitality Industry, the management of the hotel set an ambitious target to implement an Integrated Management System of ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 22000:2005, making them the first hotel to be certified in Ghana and West Africa.
The hotel has installed systems to control the use energy by the hotel including, a heat recovery system, motion sensors in guest rooms, offices and bathrooms. Using the “Hotel Carbon Management Initiative tool”, Electricity, Gas and Fuel readings are taken daily and monitored against set reduction targets. The hotel has systems in place to conserve water and also segregate their waste, Organic waste from the hotel is decomposed into fertilizer by Jekora Ventures Limited.
Members of Staff are regularly educated on waste management and hotel guest are also encouraged to minimize electricity use and conserve water.
Mr. Jeffery Martin Ashiamah the ISO coordinator of Accra City Hotel on World Environment Day wishes to encourage businesses to adopt simple sustainability practices such as water conservation, reusing printed paper and turning off light and unplugging all sockets when work closes. These he believes will help businesses to cut down expenditure , improve the company’s reputation and help save the environment.
